The McAlester Lady Buffaloes golf team enters the season looking to build on the momentum from last year’s success under head coach Justin Bond.
“We are a team looking to build off of last year’s success,” Bond said. “This year will we be led by two seniors Audrey Rampey and Sophie Wansick-Eaton. Last year, we gained much experience and confidence in qualifying for the state golf tournament. We are one of the best teams in the state.”
With valuable postseason experience returning, McAlester believes it can once again compete with the top programs in the state. The leadership of its senior class will be key as the team looks to continue progressing throughout the season.
Senior Audrey Rampey will anchor the lineup as the Buffaloes’ top golfer.
“Audrey will be our 1 bag this year,” Bond said. “At times last year, she was our best scorer. Audrey can drive the ball really well.”
Rampey’s ability off the tee gives McAlester a strong foundation each time the team takes the course. Her scoring ability and experience help set the tone for the rest of the lineup, and the Buffaloes will rely on her steady presence throughout the season.
Senior Sophie Wansick-Eaton has also emerged as a key contributor for the program.
“Sophie is a much-improved player that is playing with a lot more confidence this year,” Bond said. “She believes that she can play a consistent 2 bag for us. Sophie has demonstrated how four years of hard work can develop into success. Sophie is a great student with high character.”
Bond praised Wansick-Eaton not only for her improvement on the course but also for the leadership and example she provides to the rest of the team.
Another player to keep an eye on is underclassman Parker Cochran, who has the potential to become an important part of the Lady Buffaloes’ future.
As McAlester builds on the confidence gained from qualifying for the state tournament last season, the team’s blend of experience and continued development gives the Buffaloes optimism heading into the year. With Rampey leading the lineup and Wansick-Eaton providing leadership and consistency, McAlester looks poised to continue competing among the state’s best teams.
