OUTLOOK
The McAlester Buffaloes boys golf team enters the season with experience and momentum as they pursue another strong postseason run under head coach Justin Bond.
“McAlester Boys golf team is returning three starters from last year’s state qualifying team,” Bond said. “We will be anchored by our returning 1 bag senior Seth Gilliam, junior Jackson Miller and sophomore Colby Wheat. We have a good supporting cast that will be competitive again this year.”
Leading the Buffaloes is Seth Gilliam, a standout senior who has consistently delivered strong performances throughout his career. “This is an outstanding golfer that is looking forward to continue his golfing career at the next level,” Bond said. “Seth plans on attending Seminole Junior College and playing golf there. Seth has the ability to shoot very low scores and compete against the state’s best. He is a three-year state qualifier and looks to leave his mark as one of the best golfers in McAlester High School’s history.” Gilliam’s consistency and leadership have helped set the tone for the program, and his ability to post low scores makes him a cornerstone for the Buffaloes’ lineup.
Sophomore Colby Wheat gained valuable experience during last year’s state tournament push. “He was our fifth bag on last year’s team and gained value experience with our state tournament push. Colby was a big part of what we did last year and looks to be a big part of what we are going to accomplish this year. Colby led the team in eagles from last year with four. Colby’s football season was cut short with an ACL injury. He is hoping for a full recovery for the golf season.”
Bond also highlighted twins Kennedy Young and Kingston Young. “Kennedy and Kingston are great additions to our team,” Bond said. “They are twin brothers that have moved here from Hartshorne to be a part of our golf program. They both show up with a great attitude and work hard in weight room. Although Kennedy fancies himself as the better golfing twin, Kingston gives him good competition. They are both pressing to round out our golf team this year. You would need to ask them about their nicknames Nighthawk and Red Dragon.”
Junior Jackson Miller provides another experienced presence in the lineup. “Jackson has qualified for the last two years for the state tournament,” Bond said. “He is a consist scorer for us. His chipping and approaches to the green is where he really excels. Jackson will take another step forward this year and carry a bigger load for us.”
With a strong returning core and competitive depth, the Buffaloes look poised to build on last season’s success.
