If you walked in just to walk out, then I reckon you get going
But if you’re built for staying then I pray that you stay knowin’
I was never bound for perfect but I sure am bound to you
Sure as stars shine tonight and the river flows on through
The words from the hit song “Carried Away” written by Zach Bryan sum up the commitment to a purpose for Trey Howard. Whether he’s on the wrestling mat for the Buffaloes or in everyday life, the McAlester High School senior is determined to see his efforts reach the desired goals.
“If I were to sit down an define myself, I’d choose words like energetic, sometimes a little weird but above all hardworking,” explained the 160-pound grappler who has been wrestling since age 12. “No matter what I do, it’s all about hard work. That’s just who I am.”
Howard’s self-exam matches the observation of his wrestling coach.
“He goes hard every day. His energy level is always high because he’s constantly seeking ways to improve his wrestling skills,” replied Josh Cunningham. “Trey’s work ethic is contagious and makes him the kind of guy you want to be around.”
With a 20-4 record entering the Class 5A regionals, Howard has his own strategy for staying in control of his next match.
“Because I have a high motor, a good gas tank, I just try to wear my opponents down.”
With a preferred go-to-meal before he steps on to the wrestling mat consisting of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich while listening to red dirt country including Zach Bryan, the 2021 senior has future plans for a college degree in kinesiology.
But first things first, finish the current job at hand while following the words of Sylvester Stallone.
“It’s not about how hard you hit, it’s all about how hard you can get hit and keep going forward.”
And for Trey Howard it’s a motivation to keep going no matter the challenge and find a way to win.
