The McAlester Buffaloes baseball team enters the season with confidence and continuity under head coach Justin Mullins. “Feel like we have a chance to be a good ball club,” Mullins said. “We have about 80 percent of our club back from last year.” With experience returning, the Buffaloes are focused on growth and development. “We will be young in spots but feel like they can get the job done.”
Leading the way for McAlester is Denver Durant, who made a major impact as an underclassman. Mullins said Durant “had a big year for us last year as sophomore.” His role will only expand this season, as “Will be our everyday shortstop and one of our top arms.” Mullins also pointed to Durant’s offseason dedication, saying, “Worked hard this summer and put on about 15 pounds of muscle.” When asked about his standing among his peers, Mullins added, “I would put him up there as one of top players in state in his grade.”
Another name expected to make noise this spring is underclassman Jaxon McKinney, who impressed as a freshman. “Jaxon had a great Freshman campaign,” Mullins said. “He led our team in most offensive categories.” McKinney also made his mark defensively, as Mullins noted, “Set school record last year with 22 runners caught stealing.” Looking ahead, expectations are high. “Looking for big things this coming spring.”
Wilson Allford brings effort and consistency to the program. Mullins described him by saying, “Wilson is one of the hardest workers on the team.” He also emphasized Allford’s impact in the dugout and clubhouse, adding, “Great teammate! Looking for big things from him this spring.”
Depth across the roster is another strength for the Buffaloes. Mullins said Brody Parker “will be one of our top pitchers.” Grant Mullins “will be one of our district pitchers and will play middle infield and bat at the top of the order.” Senior Cole Leybas “was one of our top hitters last season” and “will DH and play 1st base for us.” Langston Weger adds power and pitching depth, as Mullins said he “will be one of our go-to arms and will hit in the middle of the order for us. Big kid with some pop.”
