For McAlester’s Rylan Lesnau, basketball isn’t just a game—it’s been a part of her life for as long as she can remember. “I started playing basketball really young,” she said. “I have always enjoyed the intensity of the sport and how fast the games are.” That love for the game has fueled her passion and work ethic, pushing her to grow into a leader both on and off the court.

Lesnau takes pride in what it means to be a part of the McAlester program. “I enjoy the McAlester program because of how much a priority the game of basketball is to the coaches and my team,” she said. “We work hard towards the same goals every day no matter the circumstances.” That shared commitment has built a strong foundation of trust and determination across the roster.

Her leadership role this season extends far beyond her individual performance. “My role on the team isn’t just to play my best but to also be a leader and lift everyone up,” Lesnau explained. “Our energy has been so high even at our first practice of the season. I have really high hopes for our confidence and energy the rest of the season.”

Though the team welcomed several new faces this year, chemistry hasn’t been an issue. “Our chemistry is definitely new this year with lots of new girls, but we all have bonded very well and play great together,” she said. “Our biggest goal would be to become a whole different team from our first game to our last—not just to become better at winning but to become better as a team overall.”

When the pressure rises, Lesnau stays composed. “In a big game or when it comes to handling pressure, I have to cancel out everything around me and just see my teammates and our opponent to stay in the zone and keep focused,” she said. She also prepares mentally before games by unplugging from distractions. “Before a game I will get off my phone at least 30 minutes before and just listen to music in the locker room with my headphones.”

Faith plays a major role in her motivation. “What motivates me to push myself is the talent God has blessed me with,” Lesnau said. “I don’t want to let that go to waste and I want to use it in His glory.”

Her ultimate goal? To be remembered for more than just her skills. “I hope I’m remembered for not just my talent but having a big heart for the game,” she said. “I also care about my teammates and lift them up every chance I get.”
