The McAlester boys track team enters the new season with high expectations, returning a talented core of athletes who have already proven they can compete at the highest level. With several state qualifiers and a deep group of contributors, head coach Johnny Skimbo is excited about what’s ahead.  

“We’ve got a good mix of experienced guys and young athletes who are ready to step up,” Skimbo said. “Having multiple state qualifiers coming back is huge, and we’ve got some others who have the potential to get there this year.”  

Among those returning is Devion Bickham. Bickham, a sophomore, placed third in the high jump at regionals last year with a mark of 6-2 and barely missed qualifying in the long jump. This season, he’ll take on new challenges.  “Devion is an elite athlete,” Skimbo said. “He’s explosive, he’s strong, and he’s just scratching the surface of what he can do. He’s going to add the 300 hurdles this year, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he excels in that, too.”  

Another standout to watch is junior Liam MacMahan, a pole vaulter who has worked tirelessly to improve. Over the winter, MacMahan competed in Arkansas Vault Club competitions and raised his personal best to 11-7, a 13-inch improvement from last season.  “Liam is one of the hardest workers we have,” Skimbo said. “He studies the event, works on technique year-round, and really pushes himself to improve. He’s going to be a key piece for us in multiple events.”  

One of the team’s most valuable but often overlooked athletes is Cleveland Williamson, a senior long jumper who also helps in high jump and relays. He was a regional long jump champion as a freshman and continues to be a leader for the team. “Cleveland does everything the right way,” Skimbo said. “He’s a great athlete, but he’s also the guy picking up trash after road trips, helping his teammates, and setting an example. You want guys like that on your team.”  

With a strong group of returning athletes and a few promising newcomers, McAlester looks poised for success.
