McAlester Buffaloes Tennis Team – Presented by BancFirst of McAlester

Building off last season’s progress, the McAlester boys tennis team enters 2025 with confidence and experience. Head coach Chris Burns sees a group that has matured and is ready to compete at a high level. “We are an experienced team looking to capitalize on the growth from last year and have a great year,” Burns said. With strong leadership and promising young talent, the Buffs are aiming for a standout season.

At the heart of the team is senior Chris Whaley, the undisputed leader and team MVP. Known for his relentless work ethic and ability to uplift his teammates, Whaley has set high standards for himself and those around him. “Chris is the heart of the team,” Burns said. “He works hard all the time and is a great teammate to all the other players in McAlester.” His dedication and commitment make him a key piece of the Buffs’ success this season.

One of the most exciting players to watch is sophomore Wyatt Phillips, who turned heads last year by placing eighth in the state at No. 1 singles as a freshman. With that experience under his belt, Phillips is determined to make another deep run at state. “Wyatt placed 8th in the state at 1 singles as a freshman in 2024 and is looking to make another run deep into the state tournament,” Burns said.

While standout performances grab headlines, every team needs an unsung hero, and for the Buffs, that player is Alex Jurkiewicz. He’s not just passionate about tennis—he’s a true team player who helps elevate those around him. “Alex has a great bond with all the players for McAlester and a deep love for the game of tennis,” Burns said. “He enjoys playing with anyone that will say yes and helps everyone achieve more.”

Another pillar of leadership is senior Matthew Lungstrum, the team’s Character Counts honoree. His influence extends beyond the court, setting a strong example for younger players. “Matt is a great guy that always strives to do right,” Burns said. “As a big piece of the team, he shoulders the responsibility of setting the expectations for the younger athletes with grace.”

With a strong foundation of experience, leadership, and rising talent, McAlester is ready to take the next step in 2025.
