For Melissa Elizondo, representing McAlester High School is a privilege that she holds close to her heart. “It means everything to me. When I play, I’m not just representing myself; I’m carrying the pride of my school and community,” she says. As a senior, Melissa has dedicated her high school years to excelling in cheerleading and track while also being an active member of her school’s band.

Melissa serves as a flyer for the cheer team and competes in relay events for track. Her drive to succeed is fueled by her commitment to personal growth. “Personal growth and success motivate me so I can become better and reach my goals,” she shares. That determination has led her to both individual and team successes. One of the standout moments of her career came when the cheer team placed first at a game day competition and earned state championship rings. “The best highlight moment in my career would be going to state with my cheer team and placing first at a game day competition,” she recalls proudly.

Achieving success has required Melissa to overcome challenges. “It’s taken a lot of dedication and hard work to push through the tough days. I’ve learned to not give up when things didn’t go as planned,” she says. Along the way, she has leaned on key influences in her life, including her father. “Someone that I look up to is my dad. I look up to him because he is hardworking, and he is always pushing himself to be the best,” she says. Melissa also credits Mr. Calaway, one of her teachers, for helping her realize her potential. “Because of him, I started seeing my potential and pushed myself to do better,” she adds.

Melissa’s involvement extends beyond sports. She is a percussionist in the school band, where she plays the vibes for the marching band. This dedication to her school and community fuels her desire to make a positive impact. After graduation, Melissa plans to attend Oklahoma State University and pursue a career in medicine. “I want to study medicine because I want to be a physician,” she explains.

Reflecting on her high school journey, Melissa is grateful for her teammates, coaches, and teachers who have supported her along the way. “I’m super proud of how far my team has come, and that we should always have each other’s back when things get hard. I am forever grateful for the people I’ve got to meet for my last year of being in high school.”
