Representing McAlester means everything to BeauDee Nystrom. “It means so much to go out and compete for the people that support us,” she shared. “I get to represent McAlester and show that we work hard and want to be better than the day before.” As a senior on the basketball team, BeauDee plays both center and power forward, striving to embody the work ethic and dedication that her community values. For her, every game is an opportunity to grow as a player and to give back to her supporters.
BeauDee’s dedication to improving her skills is evident in the time she invests. “Time. So much time is put into getting better, and there is always more work you could do,” she said about what it takes to be successful in basketball. “Taking the time to work on yourself and your skill set, while balancing other aspects of life.” Her commitment shows in her achievements, including a standout performance during her junior year. “We were playing in the regional consolation game. I had been in a rough patch for the last few games, and this game I finally got out of my head and was playing pretty well. I ended up with a double-double and broke my personal scoring record.” This breakthrough moment remains a highlight of her high school career.
In addition to basketball, BeauDee also competes in track and is active in several campus organizations, including FCA, Native American Club and the National Honor Society. Inspired by her mother’s resilience, she hopes to pursue a career in medicine. “I plan to attend Kansas State to get my bachelor’s degree in biology/biomedical Sciences, then attend medical to become a doctor,” she explained. Her journey reflects the lessons she’s learned from her biggest influences, including her fourth-grade teacher, Ms. Wynn, who was a source of strength and support. “She taught me that tough times will pass and that you can get through it no matter what.”
As she finishes her high school career, BeauDee is determined to make every moment count, for herself, her team, and her community. Her drive to improve and to honor those who believe in her is what makes her a standout at McAlester High School.
