The McAlester Buffs basketball team is preparing for the 2023-24 season with a sense of optimism. Under the guidance of their new head coach, Mike Dooney, they’re looking to build on last year’s record and show significant improvement. Despite being a relatively young team with limited playing experience returning, the Buffs are excited about the challenges and opportunities ahead. The Buffs have undergone some significant changes, including the implementation of a new system and the arrival of a new head coach. With these changes, they expect an adjustment period as the team gets accustomed to the new strategies and dynamics. “With a new system and a new coach, it will take time for team to adjust,” Dooney said. “We should be a lot better and much improved by the playoffs.”
Malachi Wrice (6-7, Sr.), also a standout in football as a DI player, brings his athleticism and height to the basketball court. He’s a high-energy post player who excels above the rim. Wrice’s remarkable rebounding skills and the ability to guard both inside and out make him a player to watch. Alex Dooney is also excelling in the team’s defensive efforts. He has a reputation as the best defender and consistently steps up to correct any mistakes. His dedication is evident as he leads sprints and serves as a positive and uplifting presence among his teammates. His hard work and exemplary work ethic set a standard for the team. The McAlester Buffs are a team in transition, working to adapt to a new system and coach. With Malachi Wrice’s athleticism and Alex Dooney’s unwavering commitment, the Buffs aim to build a foundation for future success. Keep an eye on this team as they develop and improve throughout the season.
