Whether she’s on the softball infield, in the classroom, on the job or volunteering her time to serve others, for Brooklyn Weiher it’s all about moving the needle from good to better to best. And from the look of the results, the junior at McAlester High School continues to climb the ladder of success.
“You have to be ready 24/7 because you never know what is going to happen,” explained the first baseman for the Lady Buffs fastpitch softball team. “That’s why I try to work hard everyday and keep my goals in front of me.”
Often defined by teammates, coaches and teachers as dependable and energetic, Weiher also values another character trait.
“I strive to always be kind hearted, to my friends, my teammates or anyone else. I challenge myself to step out of my comfort zone and make new friends all the time.”
Not only does her extra efforts show up in the box score after softball games, Brooklyn’s time management enables her time to maintain a 4.0 GPA and take steps toward her future career in medicine as a anesthesiologist by mastering Health Career Certification classes at Kiamichi Technology Center. In addition to camping and spending time at the lake, she sets aside “Brooky time” in order to complete community service hours.
“Everyone deserves to be loved and community service gives me that opportunity to help others in need.”
The commitment to always reach higher is something that draws Weiher praise from her coach.
“Brooky, as we call her truly defines the meaning of commitment,” explained head coach Kelleya Cox. “A great student who makes the grade while enrolled in AP classes and her commitment to the Lady Buffs softball program is monumental. She’s always there for them, willing to go the extra mile.”
Brooklyn’s always giving commitment is something she credits to the real life examples of love she observed at home.
“My mom (Jarrah Atkins) has always worked her hardest to provide me the best life possible,” Brooklyn said while wiping away tears of appreciation. “She showed me that if you’re willing to commit yourself to the challenge and work hard, you can achieve your goals.”
As Brooklyn Weiher, who wears the number-11 jersey for the Lady Buffs explains further, it’s the true meaning of being a McAlester Buffalo.
“TRADITION…my parents also went to school here and I like the McAlester tradition of opportunities available to allow you to achieve any goal you set for yourself when you’re willing to put forth the effort.”
