The Buffaloes defensive game plan welcomes the skills of five returning starters to join forces with other talented players. “We try to enforce our will by attacking the football getting 11 Buffalo helmets to the ball on every snap,” explained Mazey. McAlester will have plenty of strength in their 3-man front anchored by Garrett Shumway (5-11, 270, Sr.) who recorded 15 tackles for loss among his 80 stops last season playing alongside Zac Rogers (6-2, 265, Jr.) and Jaden Shumway (5-11, 255, Jr.). The speed rush and attacking efforts of Malachi Wrice (6-5, 245, Jr.), Dakota Moton and Brayden Bumphus (5-11, 177, So.) at outside linebackers possess the ability to stop opposing ball carriers as well as defend in pass coverage while inside linebackers Owen Russell (6-3, 170, Jr.), Dustin Jacobsen (6-0 198, Jr.), Fyfer Mitchell (5-11, 215, So.) controlling the middle. The Buffaloes secondary that totaled 15 interceptions in 2021 will remain strong with Ethan Watkins, Elijah Chatman, Chaz Bradley, Caden Lesnau and Erik McCarty bringing speed and athleticism to defend against the pass as well as provide run support. “The experience of getting to the championship game is a plus for our approach to this season,” Mazey replied while looking at his depth chart. “We still need to develop depth in places as we will have several new faces stepping into the heat of battle.” McAlester will be joining teams from across Arkansas, Texas, and Louisiana as they descend upon Shreveport LA to participate in the 2022 Battle on the Border High School Football Showcase in September.
