McAlester’s Laurie Smith – SNU Leadership Spotlight

As an educator and coach working for the McAlester Public School district, Laurie Smith knew she wanted more from her career. She found that opportunity at Southern Nazarene University where she was able to pursue her master’s degree.

“I currently teach English II and English III at McAlester High School. I am also the head volleyball coach,” Smith said. “I do not personally do well with online classes, but my SNU cohort meets once a week face-to-face on the campus of McAlester High School. Each class is approximately six weeks long, so I am only enrolled in one class at a time. This allows me to concentrate on only that particular course which actually helps me learn better. The application process was easy and took very little time as well.”

Having the ability to stay close to home while meeting once a week was the perfect timeline for Smith. During the course, Smith has learned there are several other things about the program she enjoys.

“I have enjoyed everything from the classes, the instructors, and my classmates,” Smith said. “My classmates are amazing educators who support and encourage each other. I absolutely love the fact that we will all go through this entire class together. They are like family to me. My instructors have pushed me while encouraging me to grown as an educator.” Smith added #E54ForLife.

For Smith, a master’s degree in Educational Leadership will open doors and allow her to continue to grow professionally.

“This degree in Educational Leadership will allow me the opportunity to grow professionally and take on a role in administration when the right situation presents itself to me. When I have completed my course work, I will be able to take the certification test for both principal and superintendent credentials,” Smith said.

Coach Smith offers some advice to anyone looking to further their career.

“You will not find a better school than SNU. The professors are fantastic, always there for the students, the staff is amazing, always extremely helpful, and your cohort will become our second family, supporting and cheering each other on,” said Smith.
