The McAlester baseball program has long put an emphasis on reliability and unselfishness. One would have a hard time finding someone who exhibits what it means to be a Buffalo more than Blake Martin.

Taking the diamond for the first time at age six playing in the Boys & Girls Club leagues, Martin has been playing with most of the same teammates ever since.

“We’re all best friends and I feel like we just keep getting closer and closer,” the 2021 senior said. “I just feel like it helps us all when we get on the field to play.”

When it comes to his favorite position, there’s nowhere Martin would rather be than on the mound with ball in hand. “Pitching has always been my favorite thing to do on the field.”

A pitcher needs to be resilient to overcome high-pressure situations. For Martin, he has shown resilience on and off the field. His sophomore season was cut short due to an injury, and the novel coronavirus shut down his junior season after only one appearance on the mound.

“It really took a toll on me because it was basically like missing two years of getting to play baseball,” Martin said. “I felt like this year everyone was excited and just ready to get back on the field and start playing again.”

The right-hander persevered and is now making the most of his final season wearing the McAlester uniform. He has delivered two of the biggest wins to date this spring in complete game fashion against Collinsville and Shawnee, but he gives all the credit to his teammates and his faith.

“I battle through those tough spots by trusting God and trusting the guys behind me will make the plays,” he said.

Being the lone senior on the team, Martin doesn’t see his team’s youth as a hindrance, but rather a strength.

“It helps a lot of the younger guys feel the need to step up,” Martin said of the situation. “It helps them become more experienced and mature.”

As Martin’s senior season progresses, he reiterates that it is his Buffalo brotherhood that has made it so special.

“I’ve had a blast with all of my best friends this year.” Martin said. “I’d do anything to get to do it all over again.”
