When a plan stops working, Lilian Thorpe has a simple response: “Find a way.”
The advice from Coach Patzack reminds the McAlester High School sophomore not to make excuses or give up when something becomes difficult. Instead, she wants to adjust, keep working and find another route to her goal.
Thorpe brings that mindset to softball and cheer, where challenges have helped her discover how much she can handle.
“The accomplishment I’m most proud of is learning how to push myself even when things get difficult,” Thorpe said. “Whether it’s in athletics, school or my personal life, I’ve learned that I’m capable of more than I sometimes think I am.”
“Softball and cheer have taught me a lot about teamwork and dedication,” she said. “Both sports have shown me that not everything will always go the way I want, but what matters is how I respond and keep going.”
Thorpe sees that attitude in teammate Rylan Lesnau, whose steady optimism has made a lasting impression on her.
“No matter what the challenge is, she will tackle it to the best of her ability while still lifting up others around her,” Thorpe said.
Mrs. Easley has reinforced that confidence in the classroom. By encouraging Thorpe to do her best and recognize what she is capable of accomplishing, Easley has helped her work harder and believe more fully in herself.
Outside athletics, Thorpe participates in yearbook and looks for opportunities to help others, support community activities and represent McAlester High School positively. That involvement reflects what she appreciates most about McAlester.
“I love that it feels like people know and support each other, especially at school and sporting events,” Thorpe said. “I like having a place that feels familiar and where I know I have people cheering me on.”
Thorpe also credits Coach Ivy with pushing her beyond her comfort zone and helping her discover a love for the game.
“I would like to thank Coach Ivy for pushing me out of my comfort zone to take a step into something I never thought I would enjoy this much,” Thorpe said. “I would also like to thank him for making me love the game.”
