A change in perspective has helped Gracelinn Douglas recognize the value in every practice, challenge and opportunity that comes with representing McAlester High School.

The senior varsity cheerleader has learned to replace the thought, “I have to do this,” with, “I get to do this.” That shift has taught Douglas to approach cheer with gratitude and appreciate the privilege of working toward something meaningful alongside her teammates.

“Waking up every day and having the opportunity to work hard is a privilege, not a chore,” Douglas said.

One of the clearest examples of that hard work came during her sophomore year, when McAlester qualified for state for the first time in years. The achievement remains one of Douglas’ proudest memories because it reflected the time and effort invested by the entire team.

“Knowing how much work our team put into reaching that goal made it a moment I will always remember,” Douglas said.

Her role within the program has continued to grow. Douglas served as co-captain during her sophomore year before being selected as captain for both her junior and senior seasons.

Douglas has cheered alongside teammate Landry since middle school, and their years together at McAlester have created a meaningful bond. Together, they have shared difficult practices, exciting accomplishments and everything in between.

“Having someone beside me who understands the hard work and dedication that cheer requires has made our friendship and our time as teammates especially meaningful to me,” Douglas said.

Douglas has found encouragement in the classroom. Ms. Morris became her favorite teacher by helping her trust her own ideas and recognize that approaching a subject differently did not make her thoughts or answers wrong. That support helped Douglas grow more confident and become comfortable expressing herself.

Away from cheer, Douglas is a member of the National Honor Society and has taken concurrent college courses through the University of Oklahoma for the past three semesters. Douglas has also danced at Angie’s Dance Plus for 11 years, completed community service through several local activities and organizations, and spent her summers working at a marina on Lake Eufaula.

Douglas believes McAlester’s strong sense of community makes each accomplishment more meaningful. She appreciates how residents rally around the high school and celebrate its students when they reach a new goal.

“It is special to know that when we succeed, we have an entire community behind us that is proud of what we have accomplished,” Douglas said.

The advice Douglas carries with her is to remain thankful for every opportunity, regardless of how big or small it may seem. That outlook encourages her to appreciate what she has, work hard and avoid taking everyday experiences for granted.

Her gratitude extends to her family, along with Brooklyn, Jill and Tamera, whose support has remained constant throughout her journey.

“They have always encouraged me to keep going, work hard and believe in myself,” Douglas said. “I would not be where I am today without the people who have continuously supported and believed in me.”
