McAlester’s Adarra Wilson – Choctaw Nation Athlete Spotlight – Presented by The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma

In the heart of McAlester, Adarra Wilson embodies the spirit of her Choctaw heritage, which has been a guiding force throughout her life. “I was raised in a family that is fiercely proud of our native heritage,” she said, sharing the deep connection she feels to her roots. As the sixth generation to walk her family’s original allotment, Adarra feels a profound sense of history and responsibility: “My grandmother as well as my mother and uncle have taught me to recognize that this land does not belong to any one of us, but is our honor to continue to care for the land.”

Her journey into cultural exploration began in seventh grade when she joined the Native American Quiz Bowl team. “Studying with the quiz bowl team taught me more about the culture of the Choctaw Nation,” she explains=ed. “Attending Quiz Bowl contests gave me a sense of pride and I learned so much more about my heritage.” This passion for her culture has only grown stronger as she became an active member of the Native American Club, where she enjoys sharing traditions with younger generations. “I enjoy working with my Native American club when we put on programs that teach younger children about the dances, crafts, and stories of the Choctaw tribe.”

Adarra’s commitment to teamwork and accountability extends beyond her cultural endeavors to her role as an honor student. “I try my best to work with my peers at school,” she said. “I want my teachers to think highly of me, so I work hard in my classes.” Her strong sense of community is reflected in her support for her soccer and volleyball teams, where she cultivates a familial atmosphere: “I realize that treating the team as a family creates a bond between us which makes us a better team.”

With aspirations to work in the medical field, Adarra is preparing for her future. “This fall I will be attending phlebotomy classes at the Kiamichi Vo-tech,” she said. “I plan on attending East Central University in Ada, where I have been accepted into the nursing program.” Her long-term goal is to become a nurse practitioner, ensuring she can give back to her community and preserve her heritage: “I want to help keep our traditions alive for future generations.” Through her dedication to her culture and community, Adarra Wilson is not only a role model but a beacon of hope for the Choctaw Nation.
