McAlester’s Madden Goodner
The biggest victory of Madden Goodner’s young athletic career didn’t come during a game. It came during months of rehabilitation, hard work and perseverance after a season-ending injury sidelined the McAlester sophomore during his freshman year.
As a two-sport athlete in football and track, Goodner seemed poised for a promising freshman season before the injury forced him into an unexpected role on the sidelines. Rather than dwelling on disappointment, he focused on recovery and the steps necessary to return to competition.
“Despite a season-ending injury my freshman year, I was able to rehab fully and do all the necessary things to return to football,” Goodner said. “It took a lot of patience and hard work to get back on the field with my team.”
The recovery process taught Goodner lessons that extended well beyond athletics.
“Football has taught me a lot about resilience,” he said. “It has taught me how to persevere, especially when things are difficult or seem impossible. Football has taught me to keep a strong and positive mindset, even when things don’t go my way.”
That outlook is reflected in a simple philosophy that guides him every day.

“Do the little things right, and the big things will happen,” Goodner said. “Always find ways to improve and keep building.”
Goodner credits much of his growth to the people who have influenced him along the way. One of those individuals is Mrs. Sanchez, McAlester’s Gifted and Talented teacher.
“She taught me a lot by the way she cared about her students,” Goodner said. “She also taught me about patience and respect.”
He also admires former Buffalo standout Jordan Clark. Although an injury prevented him from sharing the field with Clark, Goodner paid close attention to the example he set as a leader and teammate.
Away from sports, Goodner is a proud member of the Choctaw Nation and stays active through the Native American Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and First Baptist Church. He credits his parents for their constant encouragement and support throughout every challenge and success.
Now healthy and back on the field, Goodner carries the lessons learned during recovery with him. His journey back from injury strengthened his confidence and reinforced a belief that steady improvement and perseverance can overcome even the toughest setbacks.
