For Kimmy Young, McAlester High School is more than just a building—it’s home. “I have gone to McAlester Public Schools for my entire life, so McAlester High School has always meant a lot to me!” she shared. “It will always have a special place in my heart.”
The community at McAlester High School has shaped Kimmy’s experience in unique ways. “McAlester High School has always been a tight-knit community,” she said. “We are a 5A school, but we are in a small town where everybody knows everyone.” That small-town closeness has influenced her life and friendships.
One of the most significant impacts on Kimmy’s life came from her time in athletics. “McAlester Athletics has had the greatest impact on shaping who I am today. Although I am no longer in any sports, I am forever grateful for all of the life lessons and the people I met through sports!” she said.
Among Kimmy’s proudest accomplishments is her academic success. “My proudest accomplishment would have to be being accepted into the National Honor Society!” she shared. She also credited Mr. Calaway as a key influence. “Mr. Calaway has always been supportive of every student that crosses his path. He is a great teacher that genuinely cares about his students. He has done a great job of making sure all of his classes are prepared for life after high school, especially since all of his classes are seniors.”
Kimmy’s favorite memory is rooted in her love for her community. “My favorite memory would most likely have to be when our football boys went to state back-to-back two years in a row! Everybody in the town came together to support them, and it was such a fun and enjoyable time!” she said.
Looking to the future, Kimmy plans to attend Oklahoma State University to major in Animal Science with a Pre-Veterinary focus. “I have always wanted to be a veterinarian because I have always had a love for animals,” she explained. “My brother is also a veterinarian, and I would like to follow in his footsteps.”
Kimmy advises underclassmen to make the most of their time. “Don’t take your time for granted! Four years sounds like a long time, but it goes by so fast.” As she prepares for the next chapter, Kimmy hopes to be remembered as “a good friend to many people.”
