Some athletes step into high school sports quietly, but their presence grows louder with every practice, every challenge, every small breakthrough. For McAlester freshman Mylah Cole, this season is her first big step into that spotlight—and she’s determined to make it count. “This season, I’m really focused on getting stronger mentally on the court and always pushing myself harder than I think I can go,” she says.
Her young McAlester squad has already formed a special bond, something Mylah credits as a major reason for their early growth. “Honestly, our team morale is amazing! Everyone gets along well… even when things get tough, we’re always hyping each other up and making sure everyone feels supported.” That positivity shows up in real time during games. “The biggest thing we’ve improved on is how we react when someone messes up… now, we’re immediately there to say, ‘It’s okay! Get the next one!’”
Their goals for the season go beyond wins and losses. “Our main goals… are to really show a lot of grit, and always lifting each other up,” Mylah says. Tough conditioning sessions and intentional team bonding have helped build the resilience they want to be known for.
Though she’s played point guard and shooting guard, Mylah’s current role has shifted. “Right now, I’m mostly playing in the post. It’s been a fun challenge to really focus on that position.” When reading opposing defenses, she keeps it simple: “I always try to spot the tallest person first… to see where the biggest challenge might be.”
Preparation matters, especially for a freshman seeing varsity moments. “Before a big game… I drink tons of water… make sure my ankle braces and my knee pads are on… and stretch well.” And mentally? “My main thing is just to stay positive no matter what happens… and trust God through all the ups and downs of the game.”
Her dream is big but grounded. “I really hope people remember me as someone who was a hard worker. I’d love for them to think of me as a D1 athlete and a good person overall.”
Her favorite moment so far? Easy. “When I finally got the chance to play with the varsity team, it felt like such a huge accomplishment.”
For a freshman already training weekly with Will Holiman and standing 5’9”, the path is clear. As she says proudly:
“My plans after high school are to go to college and play college basketball.”
