McAlester Buffaloes Basketball Team – Presented by Ira Brinlee Shelter Insurance

MCALESTER BUFFALOES

BOYS

Coach: MIKE DOONEY

23-24 Record: 3-19

The McAlester Buffaloes boys basketball team is embracing a season of growth and development with a young core lineup. After a challenging 2023 season with a 3-19 record, head coach Mike Dooney is optimistic about the upcoming year. “We have a very young core. Last year, we started three freshmen,” said Dooney. “This season, we’ll start one freshman, three sophomores, and one senior. We’re going to be a lot better because of the experience those freshmen gained last year.”

The Buffaloes are gearing up to compete with a roster filled with talented underclassmen who are poised to make an impact, alongside key upperclassmen. Coach Dooney and his team are looking forward to building on last year’s experience, working hard on both ends of the court, and striving for success.

The leading scorer from last season, Brandon Smith is a dynamic point guard and a scoring threat. Coach Dooney is impressed with his fearlessness: “Brandon started every game as a freshman, was our leading scorer with 14 points per game, and doesn’t back down from big moments. He’s also a star on the football field.” As a freshman, Rodney Washington is already generating excitement with his incredible athleticism. “Rodney is a walking highlight machine,” said Dooney. “At 6’2″, he can dunk in multiple ways, shoot the 3-pointer, and finish inside. He has a chance to be one of the top players in our conference.”

Standing at 6’4″, De’veion Bickham is a sophomore with a strong presence on the court. “He’s a tough match-up for opponents, as he can shoot and has guard skills. Last season, he handled guarding the opposing team’s post, and he’s only getting better,” shared Dooney.

Another sophomore, Davien Pouncil, embodies resilience and hard work. Despite breaking his leg this summer, he remained dedicated to his training. “Davien didn’t let his injury keep him from the gym. He worked on his game from a chair and did everything possible to stay sharp.” Now, at 6’4″, he’s going to be a real problem for opponents.

Known for his selflessness and team-first mentality, Alex Dooney exemplifies character. “He’s handled the challenges of being a coach’s kid with grace, always prioritizing team success over personal accolades,” said Dooney. “He’s a four-year starter who takes pride in guarding the other team’s best player. He’s unselfish and always looking to help his teammates.”

Described as the ultimate team mom, Shawna Dooney goes above and beyond to support the Buffaloes. “My wife, Shawna, is loved by the players who call her ‘Momma S.’ She has cooked team dinners, hosted gatherings, and supported players through all kinds of life events. She’s been a mother figure to these young men, fostering a sense of family in our program,” shared Dooney.

With an exciting mix of talented underclassmen and key upperclassmen leaders, the McAlester Buffaloes are ready to make strides in the 2024 season.
